Salmon Hills Screamers
X - Country Ski Program
(Bill Koch Youth Ski League)
What is the Bill Koch (Pronounced “coke”) Youth Ski League?
This nationwide program is named
after the Vermont native Bill Koch who shocked the skiing world by winning the 1976 Olympic Silver medal in Austria using
"waxless" skis. A few years later he won the World Cup Series skating his way to the podium. The mission statement of the Bill
Koch Youth Ski League is “to introduce young people to the lifelong sport of cross-country skiing, with it’s recreational, social, fitness and competitive
opportunities.”

With the Bill Koch Screamers at
Salmon Hills, kids are introduced to the basics of x-country skiing not only by technical instruction, but by
playing games on skis. Learning the basics means better balance, using less effort, while going faster, and having much more fun! The program will be
headed by Diane Vezendy and with the assistance of parent volunteers. Diane is a local high school skier, who started skiing with the Screamers at the age of
seven.
The Screamers will meet on
Sunday afternoons, 1:00 to 2:30,
December through March at the
Salmon Hills Outdoor Adventure Center, located in Redfield.
The skiers will be organized into small groups by ability and experience. The program accepts skiers under the age of 14, by their age on January 1st.
For skiers under the age of six, parent participation will be mandatory.
Annual membership is $40/child ($25 for each additional child), & includes:
* Season pass at Salmon Hills
*NYSSRA membership card (1st year membership is free)
*BKYSL window sticker
*NYSSRA Competition Manual
*Subscription to NYSSRA newsletter
*Ski for K(m)’s (ski tracking chart)

“The toughest competition is always against ourselves. We compete to be our best, not to be better than the rest. Above all, we ski to have fun.”
